(In reply to rmcguigan from comment #0) > Created attachment 8454817 [details] > screenshot_01.png > > Tested on Mac OS X 10.8 > Screenshot attached From what I can see looking at the following page on apple.com [http://support.apple.com/downloads/#quicktime], the latest versions of Quicktime is as follows: Windows -> 7.7.5 Mac OSX 10.5 -> 7.7.0 Mac OSX 10.6.3+ -> 7.6.6 That suggests that plugincheck is correct. However, I am still doing some further research to get a better idea on the release history as this does not sound entirely correct to me. For example, the version of quicktime I have installed is 7.7.3 on Mac 10.9.4

Even looking at the platform support listed here, it seems as 7.7.1 is the latest release for OSX - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTime#Platform_support I am trying to get hold of someone at Apple that might be able to clear this situation up. If anyone here can point me to a release history page, or someone that might be able to assist, please do.
Hi Schalk, "Installing QuickTime Player 7" http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3678 Has the following text: > ... > Compatibility > > OS X includes QuickTime Player (version 10.x) which handles most media > playback needs. Only Install QuickTime Player 7 if you work with older > media types, have legacy workflows that are not supported by the newer > QuickTime Player application, or need to use your QuickTime 7 Pro registration key. > > QuickTime Player 7 version 7.6.6 works with the following OS X releases: > > * Snow Leopard > * Lion > * Mountain Lion > * Mavericks > ... ... > Last Modified: Jul 14, 2014 So, my reading is it would be 'normal on a Mac' to have > QuickTime Player (version 10.x) However, if you need to use an older version there is a version 7.x.x. If plugincheck can detect *both* the 'legacy version 7.x.x' as well as the 'current version 10.x' then it would be good to test both. I'm thinking of the situation: "Mozilla Plugin check page displays Java plugin as vulnerable even if the latest Java 7 version is installed" bug 985968 which occurred when Java 8 was released by Oracle, in March 2014, and Java 7 u51 [Java SE 7 Update 51 AKA 10.51.2 AKA 1.7.0.51] was still the current version in the '7 family / branch'. See bug 985056 for the change to the Database that then triggered the above issue. Schalk, it would be interesting to know which QuickTime versions are in the database. Do you have any version 10.x? If you do, why is 7.7.1 showing as "Up to Date" in the screen shot (from comment # 0)? https://bug1037743.bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=8454817 DJ-Leith

(In reply to DJ-Leith from comment #5) > Hi Schalk, > > "Installing QuickTime Player 7" > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3678 Yep, I have looked at that page. > > So, my reading is it would be 'normal on a Mac' to have > > QuickTime Player (version 10.x) > However, if you need to use an older version there is a version 7.x.x. Yes > > If plugincheck can detect *both* the 'legacy version 7.x.x' as well as > the 'current version 10.x' then it would be good to test both. > Agreed > > Schalk, it would be interesting to know which QuickTime versions are > in the database. Do you have any version 10.x? No, there currently is no version 10.x but, with that said, even though I have Quicktime Player 10.3, I still have plugin version 7.3.3 > > DJ-Leith So, the hardest part of this, and managing the plugins database in general is, that for some plugins there just seems to be no good release history page one can use as a reference when researching this. I can for example not seem to find the release notification of the 7.3.3 plugin release for Mac. If you go to apple.com/download right now, you will find that it has version 7.0.0 and version 7.6.6 (http://www.apple.com/support/mac-apps/quicktime/ see recent software updates)
(In reply to Schalk Neethling [:espressive] from comment #6) > So, the hardest part of this, and managing the plugins database in > general is, that for some plugins there just seems to be no good > release history page one can use as a reference when researching this. I agree! The https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTime (cited in comment # 4) is, in this case, by far the most useful. Looking at "Apple security updates" https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222 Only has 6 "QuickTime" in the list of links: QuickTime 7.7.5 Windows 7, Vista, XP SP2 or later 25 Feb 2014 QuickTime 7.7.4 Windows 7, Vista, XP SP2 or later 22 May 2013 QuickTime 7.7.3 Windows 7, Vista, XP SP2 or later 05 Nov 2012 QuickTime 7.7.2 Windows 7, Vista, XP SP2 or later 15 May 2012 QuickTime 7.7.1 Windows 7, Vista, XP SP2 or later 26 Oct 2011 QuickTime 7.7 Mac OS X v10.5.8, Windows 7, Vista, XP SP2 or later 03 Aug 2011 N.B. Only the oldest link, 03 Aug 2011, includes a version for an Apple OS. My reading of this is: Apple now 'bundle QuickTime as part of the OS' for "QuickTime X (QuickTime Player v10.x)" as explained in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTime (cited in comment # 4). So Apple have, I speculate, 'done the updates for version 10.x' as part of the 'OS update' and are not separate downloads. ****** Also, if "QuickTime X (QuickTime Player v10.x)" is an Apple "Application" it may NOT have a 'plugin for a browser'. ****** (In reply to Schalk Neethling [:espressive] from comment #6) > No, there currently is no version 10.x but, with that said, even though > I have Quicktime Player 10.3, I still have plugin version 7.3.3 So, you might have the Application "Quicktime Player 10.3" (that might not use plugins) as well as a version 7.3.3 (or is it 7.7.3) Quicktime Player (that uses plugins). I also wondered if "plugin version 7.3.3" (or is it 7.7.3) is just a reflection of your 'Apple OS' (in your case - from comment # 3) "Mac 10.9.4". > ... For example, the version of quicktime I have installed is 7.7.3 on Mac 10.9.4 Mavericks v10.9.4 Update is a recent update (30 June 2014). "About the OS X Mavericks v10.9.4 Update" http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6281 > ... > 5. Other software updates available for your computer might appear, > which you should install. Note that an update's size can vary from > computer to computer when installed using Software Update. Also, some > updates must be installed prior to others. > ... So, nothing to stop Apple updating both "QuickTime X (QuickTime Player v10.x)" and QuickTime 7.7.x if that was 'detected by the Mavericks update'. > Last Modified: Jun 30, 2014 So, I speculate, QuickTime 7.7.1 might be the latest *separate* 'QuickTime 7.7.x' download (for Mac OS X v10.6 [and newer]) and QuickTime 7.7.3 'arrived as part of the OS X Mavericks v10.9.4 Update'. As you said: not easy to sort out when the documentation is so poor. DJ-Leith
